She gave seeds to her brother Anton Fessler in 1951 when he immigrated from Germany. They were eventually handed off from Anton to Michele Abbattista in 1960. Bill received his seed from Michele in 1980 and has worked for years selecting and saving seed only from the largest, earliest tomatoes. Named \u003cstrong\u003eAbbattista\u003c\/strong\u003e after the family that gave seeds to Bill. \u003cbr\u003eThis is probably the best and largest paste tomato I have ever grown. It is truly special. It stands far above other pastes. So meaty and sweet with a low seed count and deep red color. For me it is the perfect paste tomato. This is where  I went on a mission. After much googling, I found the name of one of the residents that grew it out,  got the phone number, and called a random stranger in the village of Blaby and begged for seed. He sent it. I was the first person in the United States to grow the new seed of Blaby Special and Dan McMurray was the first Canadian to grow it. The Woodlands festival has been held for more than 40 years and is an art fair with more than 180 artists and craftspeople selling unique,handcrafted items.  I believe he had a meal at the festival that included this tomato.  He didn't know the variety so he saved some seeds and grew them out and simply called them 'Gift from the Woodlands'. It is probably a known variety but I am going with the name Gary gave me when he shared seeds. Our seeds are grown from Gary's original seed. Excellent tomato. This is probably the largest paste tomato we have ever grown. The mother of all sauce tomatoes. Very dense meat and low on seeds. Most of ours were enormous, huge tankers.
