Gingerbread-REVIEW!
This gorgeous black tomato is called Gingerbread aka Imbirnyj Pryanik! I had it on my wish list for quite some time after seeing stunning pics of it on a Russian website! They said it was one of their favorites of the season, which told me I had to find it!
Thankfully, my generous friend from my Facebook community "Tomato Lover's Collective and Swap" Katrin gifted me with seeds and I was able to grow it for the 2025 season!
Tomatovna in Russia believes it is a variety from Greece, while other sources say it is from Russia. All I know is that it was a great variety that was tasty, beautiful, and productive!
Gingerbread is an indeterminate plant that was one of our earliest beefsteaks to ripen and continued gifting us with tomatoes right up until first frost. It resisted some of our late-season inevitable disease, and the gorgeous brick-brown fruits that were all blemish-free and averaged about 10oz (284 grams.)
As the listing on TomatovNa! states, the production on Gingerbread is one of the best I've seen. We grew it in one of our raised beds, and it thrived there pumping out tomato after tomato with that sexy color I love so much!
When slicing into these beauties, we were struck by the amount of locules containing lots of seeds and goo. The center was meaty enough to make a great tomato sandwich!
The taste was as gorgeous as the tomato itself! Sweet and tangy with tons of flavor and a hint of spiciness. It had the perfect marriage of sweetness and salinity for me, and Rob said the same. The mouthfeel was both juicy and buttery, and the flavor lingered and wasn't watery at all!
Simply put, we felt Gingerbread was an absolutely delicious tomato that we would absolutely grow again. Between the looks, production, and taste....it deserved the rating we gave it (see below!)
It has been a pleasure sharing seeds with so many from my community, and I hope it gets out there into circulation as it deserves to be! It was also grown for TLC's "Ultra Rare" growout last season, so I'm thrilled it will be grown in more gardens in 2026!
Gingerbread (Imbirnyj Pryanik) is a winner!
