10+ Organically Grown Seeds — Scotch Brains Orange Pepper

Combining the unmistakable tropical character of a Scotch Bonnet with the gnarly appearance and increased heat of a 7 Pot Brain Strain, Scotch Brains Orange is an exceptional Capsicum chinense variety for growers who value flavor every bit as much as fire.

The original Scotch Brains traces back to a cross between a Scotch Bonnet and Yellow 7 Pot Brain Strain, bringing together two very different but complementary pepper types. The resulting peppers retain the squat, lobed influence of a Scotch Bonnet while developing the deeply wrinkled and bumpy surface associated with Brain Strain genetics.

Scotch Brains Orange is an orange-ripening expression of this lineage, producing spectacular pods that mature to vivid shades of orange. Fruit shape can show some variation, but expect heavily textured, irregular pods with plenty of folds and wrinkles. The plants can exceed 3 feet tall and are reported to be strong producers under favorable conditions.

Flavor is one of the biggest reasons to grow Scotch Brains. The peppers are known for an intensely fruity, citrus-forward flavor reminiscent of an excellent Scotch Bonnet, followed by considerably more heat. Rather than being valued solely as a novelty superhot, Scotch Brains has developed an enthusiastic following specifically because of its combination of tropical flavor and serious heat.

Exact Scoville ratings for Scotch Brains Orange are not well established through published laboratory testing, so we prefer not to assign an unsupported SHU number. It is generally regarded as significantly hotter than a traditional Scotch Bonnet, with a powerful, building burn.

For hot sauce makers, pepper collectors, and growers searching for extremely flavorful chinense varieties, Scotch Brains Orange offers an outstanding combination of appearance, productivity, tropical flavor, and formidable heat.
