10+ Organically Grown Seeds — Speckled Roman Tomato

Who says paste tomatoes have to be boring? Speckled Roman turns an everyday kitchen staple into a garden showpiece with its brilliant red fruits, jagged golden-yellow stripes, and wonderfully rich tomato flavor. Beautiful, productive, and exceptionally versatile, this is a tomato that deserves attention both in the garden and on the dinner table.

Developed by John Swenson of Illinois, Speckled Roman is the result of a stabilized cross between two heirloom varieties, Antique Roman and Banana Legs. First introduced through the Seed Savers Exchange Yearbook in 1999, this distinctive variety combines the substantial, meaty characteristics of a traditional paste tomato with the unusual shape and coloring of its parent varieties.

The fruits are spectacular. Long, cylindrical tomatoes, often reaching approximately 5 inches in length, develop a vibrant red to orange-red background decorated with irregular yellow and golden-orange stripes. Many fruits feature a slightly pointed tip, giving them an elongated, almost sausage-like appearance.

Cut one open and you’ll discover dense, meaty flesh with relatively little juice and very few seeds. These characteristics make Speckled Roman particularly desirable for preparing thick, flavorful tomato sauces without spending hours reducing excess liquid.

But don’t save them exclusively for the saucepot! Unlike some paste tomatoes that sacrifice flavor for texture, Speckled Roman delivers a rich, sweet, full-bodied tomato taste that’s equally enjoyable fresh. Slice them into salads, add them to sandwiches, roast them with garlic and herbs, or turn them into a spectacular homemade marinara.

Plants are indeterminate with regular-leaf foliage, producing generous harvests of beautifully striped fruits throughout the growing season. Sturdy staking or trellising is recommended to support the vigorous vines and developing tomatoes.

With maturity typically around 85 days from transplanting, Speckled Roman is a wonderful choice for gardeners who appreciate both culinary performance and unusual tomato varieties.
